Nelsonville was founded in 1818, and incorporated in 1838. Nelsonville changed to a City Charter form of government in 1995.
Nelsonville is located at West 39.45528° - North 82.22556°, along the Hocking River. The historic district is centered around the Nelsonville Public Square. One of the main streets, Canal Street, is located on top of where the old Hocking Canal once ran. The city is accessable by four major highways - US Route 33, Ohio Route 278, Ohio Route 78 and Ohio Route 691.

Nelsonville boil order, Pleasantview Ave, Scott St, Diamond St, East end of Fairview St, toward Verity St..

The Nelsonville Water Department announces a boil order for all of Pleasantview Avenue, Scott Street, Diamond Street, East end of Fairview Street toward Verity Street  until further notice. Boil orders are put into place as a result of broken water lines or local flooding. When this happens, the drinking water may have been contaminated which can cause many illnesses.
Here are some tips to keep in mind, should you find yourself in this situation:
• Bring water to a full boil, and boil for three minutes prior to use.
• Use only boiled water for drinking, preparing food or baby formula.
• To improve the flat taste of boiled water, keep cold in refrigerator.
• Put a cup over your faucets as a reminder to not use tap water – not even to brush your teeth!
• Instead of boiling water, you can disinfect water by adding one teaspoon unscented chlorine laundry bleach for every five gallons of water. Let stand 30 minutes before using.
• Be sure to use sanitized food grade containers for storing water.
• To disinfect water storage containers, pour a solution of one tablespoon of unscented chlorine bleach to a gallon of water into a container. Let the solution remain in the container for 10 minutes, then pour out the solution. Rinse with purified water.
• Boiled or disinfected water can be stored for six months.
• Dispose of ice cubes.
• When washing dishes, make sure to sterilize dishes with a final dip in water that has one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. Disposable tableware is an option during a boil order.
• It is also recommend you sanitize hands when washing. Again use one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water and rinse hand frequently by pouring rinse over the hands. Use paper towels to dry.
• Water for bathing doesn’t need to be boiled. Supervise children to avoid water being ingested.

Pleasantview Ave and Diamond St Intersection Closed Due to Road Damage, Please Avoid Area.

The City of Nelsonville has closed Pleasantview Avenue and the Diamond Street intersection due to a collapse in the roadway that has made the area impassable.  The Nelsonville Street department has been working to correct the problem, but the repair area has increased to include the entire intersection.  Repairs may take several days to complete.  Please follow posted detours and avoid driving in the area.

Travel Advisory for Wayne National Forest Monday Creek Trail System 5/17/12 to 10/1/12 for Trail Maintenance

Nelsonville, OHFrom Thursday, May 17, 2012 until October 1, 2012, the Monday Creek OHV Trail System on the Wayne National Forest Athens Ranger District will be undergoing several trail bridge replacements along the Main Corridor Trail, from New Straitsville Trailhead to Monday Creek Trailhead.  

The trail will remain open during this time, with temporary reroutes around each trail bridge reconstruction site.  We urge riders to exercise caution when approaching the reroutes and to modify your speed accordingly.

The Athens Ranger District bridge replacement project is being conducted to increase public safety and watershed protection. The new bridges will allow the Forest Service’s trail maintenance equipment to more easily cross streams when maintaining trails.  Though some trail bridges are being widen at this time, there are no plans in place to widen trail routes to accommodate off-highway vehicles (OHV) greater than 50 inches wide.

Hocking Parkway closed to through traffic at Hocking College, May 18th – 20th for Nelsonville Music Festival

The 8th Annual Nelsonville Music Festival is returning to the beautiful rolling hills of Southeastern Ohio May 18th – 20th for three days that celebrates music and local artistry of the region. The offers a warm, accepting environment where local artisans can sell and be recognized for their work, where local, regional and national musicians instill their awe-inspiring talents and festival goers can relax and enjoy the fruits of the regional flavor.
The City of Nelsonville, Hocking College and festival organizers have worked hard to develop a traffic control plan to maintain traffic flow in and around Nelsonville during the festival.

On Friday morning, May 18th traffic cones will be placed on Loop Road, on the hocking College Campus making it TWO WAY TRAFFIC roadway.  Signs will be posted.  ALL parking on Loop Road is prohibited.  At approximately 4:00 p.m. Hocking Parkway will be closed to through traffic from the Daycare building to the Bookstore intersection for the duration of the festival.  All traffic will be routed on Loop Road.  All THROUGH TRAFFIC will use the Loop Road detour for the duration of the festival.  THROUGH TRAFFIC is encouraged to avoid the area if possible.

Persons attending the Nelsonville Music Festival will need to follow the routes below:
From the South (Athens, SR 691): Vehicles will follow the Loop Road detour around Hocking College.  At the stop sign at the intersection they will proceed straight and be directed into a parking lot.  There is no through traffic.

From the North (Logan, Canal St.): At the stop sign Festival traffic will turn LEFT and be directed to park in a parking lot.

Hocking Parkway should be re-opened to normal traffic on Sunday evening May 20th after the Festival has closed.

Pleasantview Avenue Closed for US Route 33 Bypass Bridge Construction for Additional Week Follow Detours.

The City of Nelsonville and the Ohio Department of Transportation will keep Pleasantview Avenue in Nelsonville closed to thru traffic until Friday, May 18, 2012.  Pleasantview Avenue will remain closed at the US route 33 bypass construction site located between Diamond Street and Woodlane Drive.  The roadway has been closed since April 30, 2012 to facilitate the construction of the US route 33 bypass bridges over Pleasantview Avenue.  The Ohio Department of Transportation states that the delay is due to construction issues.  Please continue to follow posted detours and avoid driving in the area.
